The Blockchain Law for Social Good Center at USF School of Law is a training ground for the next generation of lawyers to think about technology, society, and the law in a balanced way.
COMMUNITY
The blockchain law community is growing, especially in the Bay Area. The Center helps USF Law students become integral members of this community in several ways. First, students build relationships with law firms, start-ups, and government agencies seeking to hire lawyers who understand this technology. These relationships develop through guest lecture visits in related classes, roundtable discussions with industry leaders and legislators, conferences, and employment opportunities.
In addition, the Center acts as a hub for those seeking to learn about blockchain and its impacts. We will soon establish partnerships with community colleges, high schools, and other community groups. The Center serves as a resource for members of low-income and marginalized populations wishing to learn more about blockchain technology. In turn, this knowledge expands hiring opportunities for the blockchain industry.
02
EDUCATION
The Center aims to democratize blockchain education. Through classes, workshops, and conferences, law students learn the foundations of blockchain technology, its relationship to law, and its potential for social impact. Once they are trained, the Center offers opportunities for law students to work with legislators and regulators, alumni and other lawyers, and members of the public about the use of blockchain law and technology for social good. Professor Neitz’s experience with her fellow members of the California Blockchain Working Group gives students a unique perspective in this area. Moreover, the Center holds regular conferences and other forums to connect lawmakers with blockchain developers.
RESEARCH &
POLICY
Blockchain law is a nascent and evolving field, and there is a lack of legal research on topics related to socially beneficial projects. The Center will define this space in ways ranging from more traditional conferences and academic publications to innovative virtual forums.
For example, in October 2022 the Center hosted the “Blockchain Law for Social Good Conference,” with panels featuring state/local lawmakers, attorneys, and industry innovators.

OUR MISSION
03
01

The program will conven scholars from around the world and offer our community a global outlook on laws and regulations governing blockchain technology.
The program aims to prepare the next cohort of blockchain experts in legal education, who will communicate the benefits of open, decentralized technologies to future generations of law students.
The Lab will use updated technology to host training programs, co-host events with other nonprofit organizations in the FFDW community, offer meetups for the Filecoin and broader blockchain and web3 community, and organize blockchain educational events.
Many business leaders are intrigued by blockchain technology but seek to learn more about its potential pitfalls and risks. The Center offers neutral, academic style trainings to organizations curious to learn more about blockchain’s application to their particular industries.
The Center is taking advantage of our amazing location in the middle of San Francisco by bringing influential blockchain law practitioners to the BL4SG community for events, guest lectures, and other events.
A first-of-its-kind program teaching community college professors, high school teachers, and other educators about blockchain technology’s potential for social good. The Educator Training program is a “train-the-trainer” program that also introduces a variety of pedagogical design tools related to blockchain education.
The Center is educating lawmakers, policymakers, and policy enforcers about legal issues arising in the development of blockchain technology and its potential for social impact.
A bi-annual series of workshops with law students, lawyers, and industry experts in the blockchain industry. These workshops have a global reach, and are offered both in-person and via webinar.
The inaugural Algorand Foundation Blockchain Law for Social Good Conference.
